Winterhawk started her musical carrier just about the time she was born. Her grandfather, Gearld Kruyf Sr., was a concert pianist and church organist. When given the chance Winterhawk would always sit at her grandfathers side and watch him play. Piano was her first instrument.
At 8 years old in elementary school Winterhawk learned to play the cornett and drums performing both in the elementary school orchastra. At age 16 she picked up guitar and not to be out done learned rock, folk and classical styles.
Later she picked up both flute and Alto/Tenor/Bass saxaphone.
